2015 Theme Declaration of purpose

The Environment Agency-Abu Dhabi (EAD) in conjunction with the Abu Dhabi Tourism & Culture Authority (TCA Abu Dhabi) announced the next Ecocity World Summit (ECWS) to be hosted in Abu Dhabi from October 11th to 13th 2015. The announcement was made at the 2013 biennial Summit in Nantes, France, in the presence of nearly 2000 delegates from over 44 countries.

The ECWS is the longest running international conference series on sustainable cities, commencing in 1990. ECWS 2015 will be the first edition to be held in the Middle East.

The ECWS initiative aims to gather likeminded individuals and organisations from around the globe with the aim of proposing forward thinking and innovative solutions to today’s urban problems. The key is, in the context of sustainable development, to transform cities around the world in order to make them greener, healthier and all in all better places to live in.

Adopting the theme of “Ecocities in challenging environments”, this event aims to:

  • Build on the UAE’s credibility as a serious player in sustainable development by showcasing local initiatives and creating a lasting legacy
  • Support the development of sustainable growth strategies at the city scale for the region and globally
  • Create a local, national and regional movement to accelerate sustainable city planning, land use, development and the green buildings
  • Proposed outcomes of the Summit:

    • Facilitation of multidisciplinary exchange around issues of sustainable cities – how to make them greener, healthier, and better places to live
    • Enhanced community and university interaction in sustainable practices at the local, national and regional levels
    • The announcement of new partnerships and major projects in the MENA region
